Student Bedrooms

At the moment there is much excitement in the air as A level students receive their grades and complete the application process for entry into university. In my household there is a lot of activity as my teenager prepares to leave home for university in a neighbouring country.

Below are some ideas on decorating and making sure that the student bedroom is a cosy place ‘to come home to’ at the end of the university day and also an inspiring space in which to work.

Firstly, it is a good idea to find a theme: It may be by colour or style such as minimalist or shabby chic, or perhaps something of particular interest to the student such as dancing, collecting vintage items, surfing or photography. Bring the chosen look together by sticking to the colour or style theme with the use of posters, bulletin boards and treasured momentos from home.

Apart from the obvious essentials such as bed, cupboard, desk, shelves and bedside table here are a few ideas for making the bedroom more cosy and maximising the space.

Storage: Essential for maximising space and keeping the room tidy, storage is needed for laundry, bed linen and towels, shoes and even books.

Our large portable storage cubes are not only great looking but with the plastic lined interior it makes them ideal for all of the above and so much more. The medium and small sizes are great for toiletry items and make-up.

Look for an over-the-door type hanging rack for storing scarves, gloves and belts and if there is enough space an under bed storage solution is a great idea to get rid of clutter.

A useful addition to the room would be a noticeboard or blackboard for writing reminders, shopping lists or even an inspirational quote for the day.

Rugs and cushions: Creating colour and warmth within the chosen colour/style theme. Cushions are an inexpensive option to reinforce the theme and a rug will add a touch of luxury.

Lighting: A good strong desk lamp is required for use when studying and writing assignments.

A bedside lamp can echo a theme by using a co-ordinating lamp shade.

Auradecor design offers a cool looking yet sturdy black or white bedside table box lamp which will suit most themes, and is reasonably priced. My teenager will be taking the white lamp to university, as, being a flat-packed item it is compact and ideal for transporting in a suitcase.

Mirrors: A useful addition to the room for both male and female students. A full length free- standing mirror would be ideal but if there is not enough space then a smaller version would suffice.

Helping your teen make a smooth transition to university is of paramount importance and hopefully by creating a home from home feel in their bedroom this will help with the process. Browse our website for more ideas.
